I have been trying to decide how to retrofit the deck and still be code compliant. The deck is only 18 inches high so I really don't need railing to begin with, so I guess I just contradicted myself. I am doing it anyway, and after many hours of research I found something. FastenMaster FMTHR614-24 ThruLOK Screw Bolt Fastening System. From what I have seen they are easy to use and secure.

Staining The Fence With Olympic Wood Protector – It Is Beautiful

Staining the fence with Olympic Wood Protector – it is beautiful

26 year-old neglected fence gets make over with a little pressure washing and some wood stain and protector. This is how the pool equipment fence came out after pressure power washing and wood staining. Isn't it beautiful? This is what it looked like before. This is after it was pressure washed. The neighbor gave me some canna lily bulbs and I planted them along the fence. The wood is so old and hasn't ever been maintained, it sucked up about a gallon…

Febco 765-1″ BV-Pressure Vacuum Assembly Blew Out – Defective Or Just Me?

Febco 765-1″ BV-Pressure Vacuum Assembly blew out – defective or just me?

I replaced the old Febco 765-1 with a new Febco on the irrigation system last spring because the valves were frozen shut. Based on what I see after the freeze situation from December, I wish I would have kept the old one and repaired it. Not only did it blow the top, it blew out the side. Even the nuts are already rusting in less than a year They do sell replacement parts, but your better off just buying a whole new…

Pressure Washing Til You Just Can’t Pressure Wash Any More – Funny Picture Of Me Included

Pressure washing til you just can’t pressure wash any more – funny picture of me included

I ended up selling the heat pump I was going to have installed for the pool, well because if I don't get a job soon, I am going to have to sell this place. The guy I sold it to let me borrow his pressure washer. I was pressure washing pretty much all day until I couldn't pressure wash any more. Let's just say white probably wasn't the best choice for me to wear that day. Funny thing is I…

Landscape Mulching, Ornamental Grass And Arborvitaes – Finishing A Job From Last Fall

Landscape mulching, ornamental grass and arborvitaes – finishing a job from last fall

I planted a bunch of ornamental grass last fall around the pool for some quick privacy. I got all I could get done before the weather got too cold. I finished up this landscape job for now. I used 15 bags of brown mulch and carried them down there one-by-one, it was on sale at Home Depot for $2 a bag. The evergreens are Thuja occidentalis 'Pyramidalis' or Pyramidalis Arborvitae I planted a few weeks ago. You can see in the…

Backyard Landscaping – Out With The Old And In With Then New

Backyard landscaping – out with the old and in with then new

The backyard landscaping is coming together and it's looking pretty good. A few of the plants have been moved from other areas. I always try to repurpose things, including plants. The first photo shows  the old juniper area. Not sure what those plants are in front but they were taken from the corner of the fence where the pyramid arborvitaes are now planted. The hosta were taken from the front of the house. The other plants are a white azalea, pink…

Staple Guns, Regular Or Backwards, Which Is Better?

Staple guns, regular or backwards, which is better?

I used mesh galvanized welded wire for the clematis to climb up the mailbox when I did the landscaping around the mailbox. I figured this would work well and its fairly clean looking. I used a staple gun to attach it. As usual, the job wasn't that simple. Now that I think about it, the job is generally not simple because of something to do with tools, or not having the right tool. The right tool can make a world a…
